新埜 康平 (あらの こうへい）

東京生まれ。東京を拠点に活動し、展覧会などを中心に参加している。ストリートカルチャーや映画の影響を受け、仮名の人物や情景、日々の生活に根差した等身大のイメージをモチーフに制作。余白やタギング(文字)の画面構成等、様々な絵画的要素を取り入れている。

VHSがDVDに変わる頃、ワゴンセールで買い漁ったレンタル落ちのVHSの中にあったガス・ヴァン・サントやテリー・ギリアム、ジム・ジャームッシュなどの90‘s映画の影響を受けた新埜の絵画空間は、映画やアニメのコンテのようにストーリー性があり、それは漫画の３コマ目のようなもので、その先や前にもシーンがあるかのように映し出されている。普遍的な日常を映画のワンシーンのように描き、画面の中にある枠は誰しも自然に行なっている記憶を切り取ると言う行為を漫画や絵コンテなどでみられるコマ割のように落とし込んでいる。

基本画材として日本画材の膠や和紙、胡粉などの顔料を使っている。膠や和紙、胡粉や顔料などは古典的な日本画の技法で古くから日本に伝わる伝統的な絵画表現であり、滲みやたらし込み技法などそれらの素材の特異性を使いながら映画やストリートカルチャーという影響を取り入れたモチーフをミックスさせ、日本画技法×ストリートの作品を作っている。また支持体に厚みを持たせ立体作品としての性質を加えることで、ブラウン管テレビのようなイメージを伝達するBOXのようにしている。

東京の下町に育った新埜は、街に多く見られたウォールアートやスケートボード、HIPHOPなどのストリートカルチャーに興味を持ち、単独で行ったL.Aでのストリートカルチャーの影響も受け、それらを街の色として認識してきた。街の壁に残された文字やアスファルトを滑る音、HIPHOPのサンプリングはその街の歴史や空気を伝える一つのサインであると考えている。

街や人という社会を構成するものに着目し、それらの視点をサンプリング（再構成）すると既存の製品や情景は明るい陽光が感じられるような、POPな色彩を放っている。そんな日々の生活に根差した等身大のモチーフで新たなイメージを作り出す作品を多く手がけている。

Kohei Arano

Born in Tokyo. Based in Tokyo, he participates primarily in exhibitions. Influenced by street culture and film, he creates works featuring fictional characters, scenes, and life-sized images rooted in daily life. His compositions incorporate various painterly elements, such as negative space and tagging.

Around the time VHS gave way to DVD, Arano's paintings—influenced by 90s films like those by Gus Van Sant, Terry Gilliam, and Jim Jarmusch, which he'd bought in bulk at clearance sales—evoke the narrative quality of film or anime storyboards. They resemble the third panel of a manga, suggesting scenes both before and after, as if the story continues beyond the frame. He depicts universal daily life like a scene from a film, framing the image within borders that capture the act of memory—something everyone does naturally—much like the panel divisions seen in manga or storyboards.

He uses traditional Japanese painting materials such as animal glue, Japanese paper (washi paper), and pigments like gofun as his primary medium. Animal glue, washi paper, gofun, and natural pigments represent classical Japanese painting techniques—traditional artistic expressions passed down through Japan since ancient times. He blends motifs influenced by film and street culture while utilizing the unique properties of these materials, such as their tendency to bleed or drip, creating works that fuse Japanese painting techniques with street culture. Furthermore, by adding thickness to the support to impart a three-dimensional quality, he creates box-like structures that convey an image reminiscent of a cathode-ray tube television.

Arano, raised in Tokyo's downtown neighborhoods, developed an interest in the street culture prevalent in the city—wall art, skateboarding, HIPHOP—and was also influenced by the street culture he encountered during his solo trip to L.A. He came to recognize these elements as the colors of the city. He believes the letters left on city walls, the sound of sliding across asphalt, and HIPHOP sampling are signs conveying the history and atmosphere of that city.

Focusing on the elements that make up society—the streets and people—and sampling (reconfiguring) these perspectives, existing products and scenes radiate vibrant, pop-inspired colors reminiscent of bright sunlight. He creates numerous works that generate new imagery using such life-sized motifs rooted in everyday life.
